Monitoring progress and interpreting rights

We co-ordinated a community-based report (the Alternative Report) to the Committee on the Rights of the Child about problems in Australia. Then we attend the Australian delegation’s meeting with the Committee and report back to the NGOs about their recommendations. We continue to monitor breaches and problems in Australia and prepare further information for the UN Committee.

Child labour

We campaign for Australia’s full support for international efforts to end harmful and exploitative child labour overseas. We investigate concerns about children working in Australia and campaign for effective laws to protect them from harmful and unacceptable working conditions. We are an active member of the Australian Child Labour Network.

Juvenile Justice

We monitor the treatment of children in conflict with the law and collect information about concerns. We campaign for laws and services which treat children with respect and help their reintegration into community life. We are an active participant in the international Network on Juvenile Justice.

Sexual Exploitation

We campaign against all forms of sexual exploitation of children. DCI is a member of the National Working Party developing Australia’s National Agenda to stop the commercial sexual exploitation of children. We provide Australian information to the International Focal Point on Child Sexual Exploitation in Geneva.

DCI - Australia stallOther forms of harm and exploitation

We campaign for effective laws to end all forms of violence towards children, involving abuse, mutilation, trafficking and recruitment into armed forces. We participate regularly in several human rights consultative forums with the national government and other NGOs.

This is just a sample of our work - there are lots more - investigations, campaigns and community education to be done!

Children’s rights are everyone’s concern
